The Pet Stress Equalizer

The Pet Stress Equalizer

It’s long been known that animals help reduce stress, and even lower blood pressure. On a recent trip to the airport, a woman that worked for the airport walked around with a very soft-fur golden retriever. She walked from lounge to lounge letting people pet the dog. The affect was amazing. Grouchy people smiled, kids were excited and all-around, people were very positive, having petted the dog. Pets can have an astounding effect on symptoms of depression and feelings of loneliness and obviously provide companionship. Pets become part of the family and form a lasting bond.

Health and Wellness with your Pet

It also appears that healthier people are more likely to be pet owners, likely because people with dogs tend to exercise more. Pets also play a role in providing social support to their owners. This is an important factor in helping you stick with a new habit or when adopting a new healthy behavior.
Of course, animals will also benefit by being adopted, particularly when people adopt older pets as rescues. The benefits of having a pet are clear. In the case of dogs, you will get some exercise walking the dog on a daily basis. However, you shouldn’t just jump into getting a pet without thinking through what it entails. Pets are wonderful and fun, but also need care. A dog will need a good deal of your time, while a bird, fish or a cat will need less. In either case, a pet will keep you active, both physically and mentally.

Pets for those Less Mobile

Cats require less maintenance. They tend to be quite independent so there’s less maintenance, but they offer that soft purring experience in your lap. If you are set in your ways and like it that way, keep in mind a pet will change your entire daily routine. And cats are always up to something, so they’ll keep you alert.

Thoughts to Keep in Mind

Pets are a long-term financial commitment.  Some birds can live for over 70 years.  A small puppy can rack up hundreds of dollars for food, medical care, toys and grooming just in its first year. A low-maintenance animal like a fish is less expensive. Another consideration is what happens to the pet when you must travel? You’ll need a contingency plan in place for your pet before an unexpected trip or emergency arises. You really don’t want your pet in an animal shelter unless there’s no alternative.

Statistics Prove that it’s True

The National Poll on Healthy Aging surveyed 2,051 adults aged 50 to 80, more than half reported owning a pet. And 88 percent said that their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. The poll sponsored by the AARP and the University of Michigan also reported that 79 percent of senior pet parents said that their four-legged (or feathered or finned or scaled) friends reduced stress.
